Yakutat Bay Surfing

The grey sandy beaches of Yakutat bay in Alaska attract a special kind of extreme sportsman. It started with just a few locals taking on the icy waves of the Pacific Ocean. 

Today Yakutat Surf Club has blossomed into a youth group that helps young Natives who have experienced trauma and stress in their young lives. The grass-roots community club has helped several youths but also grown the popularity of surfing in this small Alaskan village. 

In Yakutat Bay the waves swell to about 20 feet making for some big wave surfing. The nickname of "The Far North Shore" reminds surfers of the iconic surfing of Hawaii's North Shore. The only surf shop in Yakutat is fittingly named "Icy Waves."
