This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Sitka Music Festival. Since its inception in 1972 the music festival has grown in popularity. Now there are concerts held in Anchorage during the summer. This year the Anchorage concerts were two weekends in September and the Sitka concert was the 28th of September.
The Sitka festival was founded in 1972 by Paul Rosenthal. In 2011 Rosenthal retired from the festival. His successor is Zuill Bailey whose cello skills certainly qualifies him to carry on the tradition and festival.
The Sitka Music festival is not just a classical concert. Forty-two rural communities in Alaska have enjoyed classical music concerts thanks to the Festival. Since 2014 the Festival also hosted the Sitka International Cello Seminar which sponsors young cellists to study under their host Bailey for three weeks.
